We recently discovered Groupon and have both signed up for it. I had heard of it several times, and then it made the business headlines when the owners were offered an exhorbitant amount of money for it and turned it down. And there's nothing like a headline like that to drive people to your website to see what it's all about.
It really got my attention when someone mentioned that one of the restaurants in Old Town had participated in Groupon and sold over 800 dinners. Holy cow!
The tough part for the business offering the deal is that it has to be 40% or more off. The good news is that the offer gives you exposure to lots of potential new customers in your area, not only to the people who actually buy your Groupon offer, but to thousands more people who see the offer.
We bought a deal for $15 for a meal at a Vietnamese restaurant, Cafe Trang, for $7. I had been wanting to try some of the Vietnamese restaurants in town, so this was a good opportunity. It was a nice place with fantastic food and reasonable prices. We talked to the owner, who said he had sold 874 of the Groupon deals. He was very pleased to have that kind of response, mostly to people who didn't know anything about his restaurant. We will definitely go back, so there you go. What a way to jump-start your business.
